OGAudit Web3 Research: @Rocket_Pool $RPL - Cut Its Node Entry Bar in Half, Active Nodes Jumped 35%
Rocket Pool has been live since October 2021, built around two distinct ways to participate, staking as little as 0.01 ETH for rETH, a liquid yield bearing token representing a staked position or running a node directly to earn a higher return through commissions:
- Node operators must post RPL as collateral alongside their ETH currently a minimum of 10% of the borrowed ETH’s value which acts as insurance against slashing penalties, if a node underperforms, that RPL collateral can be auctioned off to cover the shortfall which directly tie token demand to how many people are actually running infrastructure rather than just speculating.
- RPL uses a 5% annual emission schedule rather than a fixed supply, split between node operators (70%, as collateral based rewards), Oracle DAO members who report external data to the protocol (15%) and the Protocol DAO Treasury funding further development (15%), total supply is expected to grow from roughly 18 million at launch toward around 30 million over a decade long emission period.
- The protocol has been independently audited by three separate firms, Sigma Prime, ConsenSys Diligence and Trail of Bits and wallets holding 10,000+ RPL have reportedly continued accumulating through recent price dips while RPL’s price still tracks Ethereum’s fairly closely (roughly 0.75 correlation) outside of protocol specific catalysts like Saturn One.
Is halving the node operator entry requirement and seeing a real 35% jump in network participation proof that Rocket Pool’s decentralization first approach can keep gaining ground against larger, more centralized liquid staking competitors or does an ongoing 5% annual token emission mean RPL holders need sustained node growth just to keep pace with dilution, let alone see real price appreciation?
