Moonbeam leaves Polkadot to move to Base, launches AI agent platform

Moonbeam, a previously prominent parachain project of Polkadot, announced a shift to Ethereum's layer 2 Base to build a network that allows AI agents to automatically communicate and settle payments directly with each other on-chain. The project has not disclosed a specific launch date.

The AI agent trend is being given high expectations by many industry leaders such as the CEO of Coinbase and the CEO of Circle, although in reality the transaction volume through AI payment protocols like x402 remains very small.

The Polkadot community sees this as a major loss because Moonbeam was once considered a flagship project of this ecosystem. Users holding GLMR tokens on the Polkadot parachain will need to migrate to Base before July 31, 2026, except for those holding tokens on a centralized exchange who need do nothing further.

Moonbeam is leaving Polkadot. The team announced a full migration of $GLMR from their parachain to Base relaunching as a decentralized AI agent communication and settlement network.

The bet: Bases liquidity and Ethereum's developer ecosystem give them a better shot at the AI-native infrastructure race than Polkadot does.

What you need to act on: the migration is 1:1 to an ERC 20 token. The bridge is live. The deadline is July 31 2026.

CEX holders are likely covered. Self custody holders need to move before the deadline.
