The week will begin tomorrow, September 15th, with the Clarity Act vote, and continue on Wednesday with the Fed’s interest rate decision.
One of the most important developments of the week will be related to the Clarity Act, the cryptocurrency legislation. A procedural vote will be held in the Senate tomorrow. The bill needs 60 votes to pass the procedural stage. If this threshold is not reached, the Clarity Act will not be rejected; however, its progress in the Senate will be significantly hampered and delayed. This is because the bill, which has been under consideration in the Senate for almost a year, will now take much longer to pass.
Republicans Warn About “Final Offer”!
Republican senators have released a revised version of the CLARTY Act, which will begin its procedural vote tomorrow, incorporating demands from Democrats. The new Republican version reportedly focuses on ethical and conflict-of-interest provisions, one of the biggest obstacles to the bill.
Senator Cynthia Lummis, one of the bill’s biggest supporters, said, “If this version of the bill also gets a ‘No’ vote, it will be a rejection of real ethics reforms,” while Republicans warned Democrats of their “Final Proposal,” describing their draft as the “final, best, and ultimate” offer.
Trump’s Cryptocurrency Assets Are Making Headlines!
As is known, one of the most controversial aspects of the law to date has been the business activities of President Donald Trump and his family in the cryptocurrency sector.
At this point, Democrats argued that the current legislation did not adequately address potential conflicts of interest related to Trump’s earnings from digital assets. However, Republican senators noted that the final draft included the changes requested by the Democrats, particularly the ethics guidelines.
Lummis stated, “President Trump has voluntarily agreed to unprecedented ethics restrictions, some of the toughest in U.S. history, covering every federally elected official, judge, and their spouse. The Democrats got what they wanted; now they have to accept the ‘yes’ answer.”
The September 15th Vote Will Be Decisive!
For the bill to move forward, Republicans need to secure support from Democratic senators. Following the postponement in August, the parties’ renewed efforts to reach a compromise have brought the fate of the legislation to the last minute.
While Trump’s acceptance of a significant portion of the ethics regulations demanded by the Democrats increases the likelihood of an agreement between Republicans and Democrats, the outcome of negotiations is not yet certain, as the Democrats are demanding stricter ethics and anti-money laundering provisions. The US Senate has a total of 100 senators. For the bill to proceed in tomorrow’s procedural votes, at least 60 senators must vote “yes.” Given that the Republicans currently have 52 votes, at least 8 Democratic votes are also needed.
