U.S. Central Command, or CENTCOM, said in a post on X on September 5 that it struck three Iranian oil tankers in response to an attack by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC.
CENTCOM said it fully disabled the IRGC oil tankers Downey and Stark off Kharg Island. It also said it completely destroyed the Kylo.
CENTCOM had earlier said the IRGC fired ballistic missiles at two U.S. Navy ships.
"The message to the IRGC is clear," CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper said. "If you attack us, we will impose a greater economic cost and remove your vessels."
He added: "We will not hesitate to defend U.S. forces. If necessary, we will destroy Iran's limited and exposed oil transport fleet."
