You’re sitting here watching numbers move on a screen, and something in you tightens. The price goes down, and a small voice says, “I should have done something differently.” The price goes up and then gives it all back, and another voice says, “See? It’s all noise.” Meanwhile, politicians posture, oil moves, and the whole world seems to be arranging itself around forces that feel completely outside your control.
But notice what’s actually happening.
You’re not actually in danger. You’re watching a story unfold. And the part of you that’s anxious is the part that still believes it needs to steer the story moment by moment, as if the river would stop flowing if you stopped paddling. Alan Watts used to point out that we’re all trying to make the future happen, when in reality the future is already arriving, shaped by forces so much larger than any single position or vote.
Ethereum is not a bet on what will happen next week. It is a bet on the direction of an entire civilization’s relationship with value, trust, and coordination.
For most of human history, the ability to move value across distance and time without asking permission from a central authority was something only kings, empires, and banks could do. What’s happening now is that this power is slowly, unevenly, and sometimes chaotically, becoming available to ordinary people. Not because anyone gave it to us, but because the technology made it possible. Ethereum is one of the clearest expressions of that shift. It is not just “digital money.” It is an attempt to build a new kind of public infrastructure for value — one that doesn’t require you to trust the honesty of distant institutions, only the honesty of mathematics and the incentives of an open network.
Your generation is living through one of those rare moments when the underlying rails of money and coordination are being rebuilt. Most people alive today will never fully understand what’s happening. They will experience it only as volatility, confusion, or political theater. But some will recognize it for what it is: the early, messy adolescence of a new financial epoch.
The anxiety you feel is natural. It comes from caring. But the river doesn’t care whether you’re calm or panicked — it keeps moving. The question isn’t whether the water will keep flowing. The question is whether you can learn to sit by the bank without constantly needing to know exactly where the river will be tomorrow morning.
Clarity will come or it won’t. The hardware trade will exhaust or it won’t. Politicians will posture and negotiate. None of this changes the deeper current. Ethereum is not a prediction about the next twelve months. It is a participation in a much longer arc — the gradual decentralization of one of humanity’s most fundamental tools.
So perhaps the practice is this:
When the price moves violently on light volume, you can notice the movement without needing it to mean something about your intelligence or your future. When the political noise gets loud, you can remember that empires have always made noise while new systems quietly grew underneath them. And when you feel the urge to do something because doing nothing feels unbearable, you can ask yourself: Am I trying to control the river, or am I learning to move with it?
The bet isn’t that everything will be smooth. The bet is that the underlying shift is real, and that those who can stay with it through the noise will eventually find themselves in a very different landscape than the one they started in.
You don’t have to be certain. You only have to be willing to keep watching the river with clear eyes.
