Motivations for Building

Every technically novel thing Sean Bowe produced at Zcash was motivated by the same underlying problem... performance.

Halo was not originally conceived as a solution to the trusted setup problem. It was conceived as a way to make recursive proofs practical without the expensive pairing-friendly elliptic curves that made them prohibitively slow.

The trusted setup elimination was a consequence of that performance goal, not the goal itself.

He would have been satisfied with Halo if it had only improved recursive proof efficiency.

The fact that it also removed the trusted setup entirely was, in his words, really really awesome, but it was a byproduct.
