According to CoinDesk citing Hashrate Index data, Bitcoin mining difficulty has recently declined by 0.74% to 126.23 T, a drop of about 14% from the January 2026 peak, approximately 19.1% lower than the historical high, and below the level of a year ago, marking the second time in Bitcoin history that difficulty has decreased year‑over‑year. The report argues that the weakening BTC price, declining mining revenue, and miners shifting capital and electricity resources toward AI and high‑performance computing businesses are the main reasons for pressure on hash‑rate growth. The Hashrate forward market expects only a slight improvement in unit hash‑rate revenue within the year.

COLDCARD BUG MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A COMPILER WORKAROUND
A new technical analysis by Core-Lightning dev ddustin suggests the 2021 COLDCARD vulnerability may have started while a developer was trying to connect three layers of the firmware: the wallet’s Python code, MicroPython’s C code, and the STM32 hardware random number generator.
The custom code appears to have conflicted with MicroPython’s existing implementation, likely triggering a compiler error.
The evidence suggests the developer then disabled the hardware RNG by setting MICROPY_HW_ENABLE_RNG to 0, allowing the firmware to compile.
That change had an unintended consequence. When users created new wallets, the firmware no longer used the hardware random number generator. Instead, it fell back to MicroPython’s much weaker Yasmarang software random number generator.
The commit message left by the dev was just the word “runs.”
The analysis argues this is a reminder that developers should never ship security-critical code they don’t fully understand, especially when it protects billions of dollars in Bitcoin.

Wu reported that Strategy founder and Executive Chairman Michael Saylor stated that the company announced the BTC liquidation plan on June 29, which is 31 days earlier than the Q2 earnings release and not a last‑minute move after reporting a loss. Saylor said Strategy never pledged to 'never sell Bitcoin', and the plan does not require any BTC to be sold; the company expects to continue net buying Bitcoin in the long term. Strategy’s official documents show that the plan is primarily for replenishing USD reserves, paying dividends and interest, and repurchasing securities.

What Is Bitcoin Mining?
Bitcoin (BTC) is a digital asset and a payment system invented by Satoshi Nakamoto who published a related paper in 2008 and released it as open-source software in 2009. The system featured as peer-to-peer; users can transact directly without an intermediary. Transactions are verified by network nodes and recorded in a public distributed ledger called the blockchain. The ledger uses bitcoin as its unit of account. The system works without a central repository or single administrator, which has led the U.S. Treasury to categorize bitcoin as a decentralized virtual currency. Bitcoin is often called the first cryptocurrency, although prior systems existed. Bitcoin is more correctly described as the first decentralized digital currency. It is the largest of its kind in terms of total market value by now.
