MultiversX (EGLD)

MultiversX just published its future: 600ms blocks and 1.8s cross-shard settlement, once the Supernova upgrade ships. That future is NEAR's present, and the architecture gap is wider than the clock.

MultiversX is four chains: three shard chains plus a metachain that notarizes messages between them. A cross-shard transfer takes three blocks by design - debit, notarize, credit - no matter how fast each block gets. NEAR is one chain: every block carries a chunk from every shard, so a transfer is a receipt executed in the next block. No coordination chain, because there is nothing to coordinate.

Validator security is the deeper difference. A MultiversX validator must hold a shard's full state to validate it, so shuffling validators between shards means syncing state first, once per epoch, partially. NEAR runs stateless validation: chunk validators verify a shard through state witnesses without storing it, so assignments shuffle constantly and corrupting one shard requires corrupting the whole network.

And the name on the box. MultiversX has marketed "Adaptive State Sharding" since 2019: shards that split and merge with load. Mainnet has run the same 3 shards since 2020. NEAR never sold the word adaptive, and last week its testnet noticed one shard got too heavy and split it in two, no fork, no human.

The explainer is genuinely good. The finish line on it is another chain's status quo.
