    Q-Day is Coming Christopher Smith's point about Q-Day being undetectable is that when a quantum computer capable of cracking elliptic curve keys comes online, the theft it enables would be indistinguishable from a conventional private key theft through any other means... malware, a compromised device, an inside job at a custodian. The blockchain records the transaction, it does not record how the attacker obtained the key. Historians may only be able to identify Q-Day retroactively, by correlating unusual spending from long-dormant addresses with whatever was publicly known about quantum computing progress at the time.
