Hard Truths

Zcash exists because Bitcoin developers decided in 2014 that the Zerocash protocol, a way to make Bitcoin transactions fully private using zero-knowledge proofs, wasn't ready, mainly because the trusted setup the original design required.

Rather than wait indefinitely, the Zcash team forked Bitcoin, kept the 21 million supply cap, kept a fully transparent and auditable side of the chain, and built the shielded, private side as an option.

Five years after launch, they removed the trusted setup entirely.

What's notable is how closely Zcash mirrors Bitcoin's design choices in places where, if they were simply building an altcoin to compete, they had no obligation to.

The 21 million cap.

The auditability.

These were not commercial differentiators.

They were proof that the privacy technology worked, built on a foundation deliberately similar to Bitcoin so the comparison would be clean.

Grafton's argument is that dismissing this technology just because it shipped on a different chain

Not because “privacy is back” or whatever lazy take people will run with

Because after the Orchard soundness bug, Zcash basically had to answer the only question that matters:

Can the new shielded pool be trusted not to hide another undetectable counterfeiting flaw?

Ironwood’s answer is Lean 4 and formal verification around the Action circuit and Halo 2 gadgets

Most chains ship faster and ask the market to trust them. @Zcash is taking the slower, harder route and making the core privacy machinery provable
